Typically characterized by dark, gritty, and intense moods, the introduction of steel pan (or steel drum) into trap beats could have been jarring, but rather, it felt like a natural progression. It’s the perfect complement to the genre’s increased use of triplet hi-hats, punchy snares, and low basslines. The ethereal, hollow tones of the steel pan add brightness without adding too much levity.
